Being "born again" is one of the most familiar phrases in Christianity, but many are unsure what it actually means. The term comes directly from the words of Jesus in Scripture.
Jesus and Nicodemus: John 3
In John 3, a religious leader named Nicodemus came to Jesus by night. Jesus told him plainly — you cannot enter God's kingdom without this new birth:
"Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God."John 3:3
Nicodemus was confused, thinking of physical birth, but Jesus was speaking of a spiritual birth — a work God does in the heart of the one who trusts Christ.
What the New Birth Actually Is
To be born again means to receive new spiritual life from God. It is not turning over a new leaf or becoming religious. Paul describes the result of this new birth:
"Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new."2 Corinthians 5:17
How Does the New Birth Happen?
Through faith in Jesus Christ. We are born again not by our own effort, religious ceremony, or good works, but by believing on Him and receiving Him:
"But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name."John 1:12
You Can Be Born Again Today
If you sense your need for this new life, you can turn to Christ right now. Admit you are a sinner, believe that Jesus died for your sins and rose again, and call upon Him to save you.
